Model details

Handsome Audio Zulu 500 modules bring the character of classic tape recording into your tracking and mixing chains, using passive analog circuitry and transformers. Designer Langston Masingale identifies the Studer A810, TEAC/TASCAM reel-to-reels and Tascam Portastudio as reference machines, with Ampex 456 used in developing the professional tape responses.

Choose the deck response, tape calibration and headroom independently, then shape the result with Bias and Enhance. That opens up combinations a conventional tape machine couldn’t offer, including cassette-style tape behavior paired with mastering-deck electronics. Go from open, lightly compressed treatment to dense, colored drums, bass or vocals.

Bias shapes the frequency balance and saturation of the tape path. Enhance blends a harmonically excited parallel signal back alongside it, bringing attack and presence into heavier processing. Stepped controls make settings repeatable across channels.

Rent individual mono channels, stereo pairs, or multiple channels for a session. Use multiple modules for stereo stems or different settings on vocals, bass, and drums. Combine Zulu with preamps, EQs, and compressors, or request it as part of a remote hardware-processing session.

Use Zulu after a mic preamp while recording, or in a converter send-and-return to revisit tracks already in the DAW. Zulu requires a compatible 500-series chassis and cannot be installed in Cranborne 500R8 or 500ADAT; external analog routing from those systems to a separately housed Zulu is a different configuration.

Typical uses: Track coloration · Parallel drum processing · Analog stem processing
